Archibald Leitch: The man who invented the football stadium.
You’ve heard of him. He designed the Bullens Road, The Gwladys Street stand and the old Main Stand both of which featured his hallmark criss-cross steel feature which which at one time could be seen at ten stadiums up and down the land.
I guess many other supporters don’t know his name. And yet had you gone to a Football League match in April 1939 you’d have had roughly a one in three chance of either standing on a terrace or sitting in a stand designed by Archibald Leitch’s company. At his peak in the 1920s, 16 out of the 22 clubs in the First Division had hired Archie at one time or another.
In conjunction with long standing Everton Fanzine When Skies Are Grey we are bring you this t-shirt celebrating the man and his legacy. It features an area of the original structural drawings and measurements for the famous criss-cross which we know, love and cherish.
